They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of Israel!”
– John 12:13
While New Zealand continues to welcome and receive Prince William and his family during their current tour, Christians commemorate the huge welcoming ceremony Jesus received when He rode into Jerusalem on the humblest of transport – a young donkey. This is the day now known as Palm Sunday.
But in contrast to Prince William’s New Zealand tour, Jesus’ arrival wasn’t announced in advance. The people of Jerusalem weren’t expecting a Sunday different to any other. But when news spread that the man who had been teaching with unearthly wisdom and healing hordes of sick people was coming to their city, excited crowds scrambled to line the city streets and welcome Jesus to their home.
Some spread their clothes on the road ahead of Jesus as he rode into the city. Others cut down palm branches from nearby trees and laid them on the ground. Jesus’ arrival was both a raucous celebration and a warm-hearted welcome to the person they hoped would some day be their King.
Like the people of Jerusalem that Sunday, let’s excitedly anticipate the miracles Jesus will perform in our lives. Let’s listen eagerly for His teaching. And let’s line our hearts every day so we can welcome Jesus in like Royalty. (Click to tweet)
